Senior Golf ChampionshipsGolf differs from all
other sports in having lucrative competitions for the age group of 50 and above. Many women
seniors compete professionally as well as men.
The leading senior
tour is the U.S. based Champions Tour, which was established in 1980, known
then as the Senior Tour, having a roster of five major championships all played
over four rounds, but most others are played over three rounds.
The performance of a
golfer can vary from one round to the next, so by adding and extra round, the
senior majors are mainly won by leading players.
The Championships are:
Senior PGA
Championship founded in 1937 and
re-named the Champions Tour major in 1980.
U.S.
Senior Open. A Champions Tour
major since its formation in 1980.
Senior
Players Championship.
This too has always
been a Champions Tour major since formation in 1983.
The
Tradition. Also a Champions Tour major since formation
in 1989.
Senior
British Open Championship. this was
founded in 1987 and joined the Champions Tour major in 2003.
Women's
Senior Golf Tour
This started in 2003,
and quickly became known as the Legends Tour, with world wide media attention.
The ladies have four
annual championships in the LPGA, namely the Kraft Nabisco, McDonald's
U.S.presented by Coco-Cola,
As in men's golf, three of the majors are played in the United States and one is played in the United Kingdom, with the four winners receiving automatic entry to the LPGA's season championship, the LPGA Playoffs at the ADT.
Seven different events are classified
as having been LPGA majors at some time, with the Western Open from
1930-1967, the Titleholders Championship from 1937-42, 1946-66 and 1972, and
the DeMaurier Classic from 1979-2000.
Women are as competent
as some men at golf, even on the toughest of courses, with some women in the
LPGA have won some big money awards, going on to play as pros, and some even
offer lessons to help you improve your game.
More ladies are
starting to play golf as seniors than in the past, and some have been very
successful, such as Annika Sorenson of Sweden winning the highest purse, Karrie
Webb from Australia was next, and Juli Inkster in 3rd place, all in 2006. In
that year, the Canadian Lorena Ochoa won both player of the year and the Vare
trophy while Seon Hwa Lee of Korea won the Rookie of the Year.
Since then, most
winners have been from countries other than the USA, whereas before then the
USA dominated the trophy and money boards.
Both the ladies LPGA
and the PGA have attracted enormous interest from the press and television
around the world, and as interest grows in ladies golf and ladies senior golf, it is expected that number the womens
tournaments will increase.
