Notable Senior Female Golfers

One of the earlier ladies was Dorothy Campbell, aka Howe or Hurd, having been married several times. Born in 1883, she won both the US and the British championships in 1909 and a total of 5 major wins, her last being the U.S. Senior Amateur in 1938.

Golfing was in her family, with her father, uncles and sisters all being accomplished players. She died in 1945 at the age of 61 in a car accident. Awarded to junior girls every year, the Glenna Vare Trophy is named after Glenna Collett Vare, 1903-1989. Glenna won the U.S. Womens Amateur a total of 6 times, the first time being at the age of just 19 in 1922.

She had great respect, playing until her late 50s, and wrote two golfing books in the 1920s Joyce Wethered was a member of the British Curtis Cup team and won 4 major championships. She was 2 years older than Glenna Vare, and beat Vare on each of the 3 times they played against each other.

Her drive was powerful, being able to drive 240 yards with a fair amount of accuracy. On marriage, Joyce Wethered became Lady Heathcoat-Amory, and lived to the ripe old age of 80.

One of the greats of Female Senior Golfing with 64 wins, was Patty Berg, born in 1918 and died as recently as 2006. She was the first winner of the U.S.Womens Open in 1946. Her record of winning 15 major championship tours still stands today. Patty turned pro in the year 1940 but joined the Navy until 1945. Since 1978, the Patty Berg prize is awarded to the woman golfer making the greatest contribution to the game.

These are just a few of the many ladies who have joined the World Golf Hall of Fame, all having made great contributions to the game, paving the way for the next generation of golfers.

Some ladies are well known for their long drive, and others for their short game, but they all inspire others to increase their skills on the course and compete in the senior tournaments just as Dorothy Campbell, aka Howe or Hurd, Glenna Collett Vare, Joyce Wethered, Patty Berg and hundreds of other notable Senior Female Golfers who have joined the World Golf Hall of Fame.
